Keep these five strategies in mind as you explore each passage.

  1. Skim for overall meaning. Read all of the text for its general content, information, and purpose.
  2. Use word formation to deduce meaning. Verb endings, prefixes, suffixes, and other features offer helpful clues.
  3. Search for details. Take a moment to note headings, subheadings, references, italics, bold text, and other features that offer quick information.
  4. Use cognates carefully. Spanish and English words sometimes share the same meaning—but watch out for false friends.
  5. Use context to determine meaning. Make an educated guess about an unfamiliar word by considering its role in the text and how it contributes to the passage’s meaning.
