1) Skim for overall meaning—read all of the text for general content, information, and purpose
2) Use formation of words to deduce meaning—verb endings, prefixes, suffixes, and other features offer helpful clues for meaning
3) Search out details—take a moment to note headings, subheadings, references, italics, bold text, and more for quick information
4) Cognates can help determine meaning—we can sometimes (not always!) compare Spanish words and English words and see how they have the same meaning…watch out for false friends though!
5) Context helps us determine meaning—educated guesses about the meaning of unfamiliar words by determining their role in the text and the making of meaning
